San Ignacio and Placencia top almost every Belize itinerary: jungle, caves and Maya ruins in the west, then beach, reef and Caribbean sunrises on the southern coast. Getting between them is the hard part. There’s no direct bus, no direct flight, and most travel guides barely mention the route.

We run a transfer company in Hopkins, right on the way, and our drivers cover the Hummingbird and Southern Highways every week. This guide walks through every option for getting from San Ignacio to Placencia, with real travel times, honest costs, and the stops actually worth making.

Quick Answer: San Ignacio to Placencia at a Glance

The drive from San Ignacio to Placencia takes about 3.5 hours by private shuttle or rental car and covers roughly 115 miles (185 km). The route heads east on the George Price Highway to Belmopan, then south on the Hummingbird Highway, down the Southern Highway, and onto the Placencia peninsula road. There’s no direct bus or flight. By public bus, plan on 6 to 8 hours with at least one change. A private shuttle is the fastest door-to-door option, and because it’s priced per vehicle rather than per person, it’s usually the best value for two or more travelers.

The Route: From the Cayo Hills to the Caribbean

This is one of the most scenic drives in Belize, taking you through nearly every landscape the country has to offer.

  1. George Price Highway: San Ignacio to Belmopan (about 40 minutes). Rolling hills, small villages and farmland as you leave Cayo District behind.

  2. Hummingbird Highway: Belmopan to the Stann Creek Valley (about 1.5 hours). This is the highlight. The road winds through the foothills of the Maya Mountains, past citrus orchards, rivers and limestone hills. It’s fully paved and well maintained, but expect sharp curves and steep grades, so take it slow.

  3. Southern Highway (about 30 minutes). Flat and straight, running through banana and citrus farms with the Maya Mountains rising to the west.

  4. Placencia Road (about 40 minutes). The road follows a narrow peninsula with Placencia Lagoon on one side and the Caribbean Sea on the other, passing Maya Beach and Seine Bight before ending in Placencia Village.

Option 1: Private Shuttle (Our Recommendation)

A private shuttle picks you up at your hotel or rental in San Ignacio and drops you at your door in Placencia. No bus terminals, no transfers with luggage, and no navigating unfamiliar highways after a week of caving and hiking.

  • Travel time: about 3.5 hours

  • Cost: $240 USD total for 1 to 3 passengers, plus $25 USD per additional person

  • Vehicles: Toyota Sienna for 1 to 4 passengers; Toyota Hiace van for 5 to 7; Hiace van with a luggage trailer for 8 to 11

  • Included: air-conditioned, insured vehicle, licensed English-speaking driver, cooler with bottled water

  • Best for: couples, families, groups, and anyone with luggage or a tight schedule

Because the price covers the whole vehicle, a family of four pays $265 USD total, which works out to about $66 per person. There is no extra charge for luggage, and we provide car seats for young children.

Staying in a vacation rental? We can stop at a grocery store on the way so you arrive stocked up. Short grocery, lunch and photo stops are included at no extra charge.

Option 2: Rental Car

Driving yourself gives you full flexibility, and the route is easy to follow: east to Belmopan, south on the Hummingbird Highway, south again on the Southern Highway, then left onto the Placencia Road.

  • Travel time: about 3.5 hours, longer with stops

  • Cost: typically $75 to $120 USD per day, plus fuel, insurance and any one-way drop fee

The catch is the one-way fee. Most rental companies are based in Belize City, and dropping a car in Placencia can add a significant charge. Many visitors also find they don't need a car once they arrive, since Placencia Village is walkable and most tours include pickup.

If you do drive, a few tips from our drivers:

  • Watch for speed bumps, which locals call "sleeping policemen." They are not always painted or signed, especially through villages on the Hummingbird Highway.

  • Plan to arrive in daylight. The highways are not well lit at night, and pedestrians, cyclists and animals share the road.

Option 3: Public Bus (The Budget Route)

There is no direct bus from San Ignacio to Placencia. The trip takes at least two connections, and schedules change by season, so confirm departure times locally the day before.

  1. Take a bus from San Ignacio to Belmopan.

  2. In Belmopan, transfer to a bus heading south on the Hummingbird Highway to Dangriga.

  3. From Dangriga, take one of the few daily buses that go directly down the peninsula to Placencia.

  4. If you miss the Placencia bus, the alternative is a Southern Highway bus to Independence, then the Hokey Pokey water taxi across the lagoon to Placencia.

  5. Travel time: 6 to 8 hours, depending on connections

  6. Cost: roughly 14.50 to 16 usd in bus fares, plus 6 usd for the Hokey Pokey water taxi if you go via Independence

The bus is the cheapest option and a real slice of everyday Belizean life. But most buses are retired American school buses with no air conditioning and limited luggage space, and a missed connection can leave you waiting hours in Belmopan or Dangriga. If you're carrying more than a backpack or traveling with children, we don't recommend it.

Worthwhile Stops Along the Way

On a private shuttle, these are easy to build in. Mention them when you book.

  • Guanacaste National Park: right at the Belmopan junction, a quick leg stretch under a giant guanacaste tree.

  • St. Herman's Blue Hole National Park: a jungle sinkhole with clear turquoise water for a refreshing swim. Ask us about adding cave tubing at St. Herman's Cave, which adds about 3 hours at additional cost.

  • Billy Barquedier National Park: a short jungle trail to a quiet waterfall.

  • Roadside fruit stands: fresh oranges, bananas and seasonal fruit along the Hummingbird Highway.

  • Hopkins Village: a lunch stop at a Garifuna restaurant on the beach, just a few minutes off the Southern Highway.

Local Tips for This Route

  • Don't plan an ATM Cave tour on your travel day. ATM is a full day on its own. We never combine it with a transfer, and you'll be too tired to enjoy either.

  • Leave in the morning. A 9 or 10 AM departure gets you to Placencia by early afternoon, with time for a swim and sunset.

  • Book ahead for groups. For groups of six or more, book at least 72 hours in advance so we can reserve the right vehicle.

  • Pack a small day bag. Keep swimwear, sunscreen and water handy if you plan a Blue Hole stop.

  • Flying out of Belize City at the end of your trip? We run Placencia to the international airport too, and build in a two-hour cushion before your flight.
